I love this photo but the flower would have looked so much better had it been in focus. What did I do wrong?

i'm a crazy canon chick, but you probably have something called AF (auto focus) where you can select to focus in on a spot in the viewing window. Try that! you can even focus on the flower and then blur your son's face.
